Learning Muddy Gumbooter Style
Exploring Nature & Our Community
"Childhood is the most beautiful of all of life's seasons." - Jerry Smith
Muddy Gumbooters are a beachcombing, treasure seeking, fairy believing, trail running, log balancing, butterfly chasing, bird watching, stick wielding, mud pie making, puddle jumping, rock climbing bunch. I nurture this desire for exploration, body moving and fresh air in our outings in the mornings. We hit up beaches, nature parks, trails, & forests to do what we do best: get our boots muddy!
Muddy Gumboots Hobby Farming
"The mud will wash off but the memories will last a lifetime." - Author Unknown
At Muddy Gumboots Farm, your children will have the opportunity to learn about and have safe interactions with our mix of animal friends: pigs, chickens, turkeys, alpacas, dogs, cats, and rabbits! Outdoor playtime also comes with the participation in fruit picking, egg collecting, nut gathering, and gardening on our 2 acre property.
A Passion for Books
"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book!" - Dr. Seuss.
I love books and reading to the children. I hope to encourage the love of reading early and continually. Any time can be story time, be it inside, outside, or at snack and lunch time. We come together to share in a story or learn about topics of interest. The reading adventures are never ending!
Muddy Gumbooter Yoga & Meditation
"Children are natural zen masters; their world is brand new in each and every moment." - John Bradshaw
I offer a yoga session during our wind-down period after lunch and before quiet time. The children are encouraged to participate at any level they can in simple movements & poses. The benefits of yoga for kids are endless. They include increased body awareness, mindfulness, strength, flexibility, concentration, memory, self esteem, and helps with emotional regulation and anxiety.

Welcome to my life's passion! I opened my own home based child care centre (previously Karen's Kids, Courtenay, B.C.) in 2005 when I decided I wanted a career working with small children. In 2009, I earned my Early Childhood Educator Certificate, and haven't stopped learning since. I earned my Forest School Teacher certificate in 2019 and my Kidding Around Yoga Instructor certificate in 2020. Along with my husband Dave, I am the parent of 3 adult children.
I believe in a quality early childhood experience for ALL children that allows for social, emotional, and physical development in a loving and accepting environment. My goal is to provide this for all the children in my care, with a well rounded balance between time in nature, time out in our community, and time at our little hobby farm. My most cherished times involve reading to the children and exploring all the forest has to offer with my little loves.
What Parents are saying about MG:
"Our daughter has been with Karen at Muddy Gumboots since she was 1. I don’t know what we would do without her and I couldn’t ask for a better care provider to help raise our daughter. Karen has been a huge part in her development and I owe so much to her. I trust that each day Karen provides the kids with structure, kindness, and love. On top of it all, the farm, the animals and all the adventures Karen takes the kids on is above and beyond. Karen’s emphasis on the outdoors is amazing and I’m confident that their days are filled with so much learning and great fun. The communication has always been amazing and I feel she truly love the kids as they would their own. Any family would be lucky to have Muddy Gumboots in their life!"
What to Expect
Muddy Gumboots Nature Based Learning is a full day Farm to Forest Preschool Program in Comox, BC for children ages 3+. Our group is a max of 6-7 children (licensed for 8) with
1 educator (Karen).
We are a fully licensed & insured multi-age childcare facility of 17 years, now operating 3 full days per week.
I offer a dynamic program with a balance between getting our boots muddy with nature exploration on various forest trails, beaches, & parks throughout the valley, AND interacting and learning about our farm animals, doing yoga, reading, learning kindness, and mindfulness. We also access community programs, when available, such as MARS Wildlife Rescue Centre & Holly Hill Farm.
We also have a large dedicated outdoor play space for the children on our 2 acre property.
"I have had the pleasure of watching my granddaughter return from daycare here and there over the years when I visit from out of town. When I first saw little A come home looking like she had played in the dirt all day I was taken aback! It wasn’t until I picked her up one day that I witnessed an amazing setting for truly a unique and loving environment for the children to be in. Now, I thought to myself... I can welcome this dirt-happy kid with this one-of-a-kind experience. The brother/sister relationships that are formed there are simply wonderful. The relationships and responsibilities that come naturally when around farm animals are by far teaching these children so much more than a daycare/school environment could. MG has my seal of approval and I will recommend this unique daycare anytime! Thank you, Karen, I absolutely love what you are doing at Muddy Gumboots!"
